
Harless Freeman Akers
In the care of his devoted family at home, Harless Freeman Akers, 84, of Riner went to his heavenly home on September 18, 2011. He was born in Floyd County on July 31, 1927 to the late Andrew Colon and Bessie Weeks Akers. Harless was both a World War II (US Army) and Korean War (US Navy) veteran, serving his country from October 1945 to February 1952. In 1987 he retired from Federal Mogul Corporation in Blacksburg, VA. He was an active member of Auburn Baptist Church where he ministered as a Deacon for several years.
He is survived by his faithful and loving wife of 59 years, Joan Link Akers, 5 children, Vicki Utt (Wesley), Donna Lucas (Danny), Jerry F. Akers (Lori), Cindy Hart (Tim), and Mark Akers. Grandpa Akers was blessed with 11 grandchildren, Tonya Phillips, Melanie Bishop, Monica Percival, Justin and Katie Lucas, Zachary, Seth, Caleb, and Hannah Akers, Matthew and Colby Memitt as well as 8 great grandchildren, Allison Bishop, Riley Phillips, Therron and Elijah Percival, Amelia and Cooper Lucas, Harleigh Hamilton, and Sheila Memitt. Also surviving are two brothers, Curtis and Grover Akers (Nita), and two sisters, Marie Trail and Beulah Sweeney (Bruce).
The family is being served by Maberry Funeral Home in Floyd where they will receive friends Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Auburn Baptist Church in Riner with his son, Pastor Jerry F. Akers, and Pastor Stanley “Shake” Smith officiating. Interment with military honors by Floyd VFW Post #7854 & American Legion Post # 127 will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg.
